The Sneed Volunteer Fire Department will soon receive a used pumper tanker after the county commission accepted the lone bid on Monday. The $95,000 was awarded to an Ohio volunteer fire department for the used 1994 vehicle.
Sneed VFD Chief Brian Geurin in January told the commission that he found the used vehicle with only 17,000 miles and 300 hours of pump time, which he said at the time was “basically like a brand new truck.” The purchase was also recommended by the fire chiefs’ association.
The truck will still have to be delivered from Cridersville, Ohio.
The commission on Monday also approved several items related to planned work on Newport Road near Lone Grove. The five items approved by the commission are related to state purchases for right-of-ways and utility relocation. Commission Chair Barry Lee-Brinkman said the project is important for motorists and first responders who use the connection between U.S. Highway 70 and State Highway 53.
“All of our fire departments have spoken on it. Without this road, this really cuts into their response times, so this is an attempt to improve the whole area,” Lee-Brinkman said immediately after Monday’s meeting.
Once utilities have been relocated, work can then begin on more than four miles of Newport Road south of Stobtown Road.
In other business, the Carter County Commission on Monday:
- declared several items surplus from District 1, District 2, and the County Assessor’s Office;
- approved advertising for bids on a new bituminous distributor truck with a trade-in;
- approved advertising for bids on a on-man spray injection patcher truck for District 2;
- approved one road crossing permit for Chickasaw Telephone Company on Harvest Road;
- approved monthly appropriations, county officers’ reports, requisitions and purchase orders.
