Named for the legendary singer and actor Gene Autry, the small town in northeast Carter County has one of the richest histories and perhaps most name changes of any other town in the region. Originally named Lou in 1883, the town’s post office was renamed to Dresden just months later. As incoming railroad tracks bypassed the town in 1887, Dresden residents moved closer to them and renamed their new site Berwyn.
The town was renamed to Gene Autry in 1941, who owned a nearby ranch as headquarters for his traveling show. The town is now home to a Gene Autry museum and is the closest neighbor to the Ardmore Air Park, the former Ardmore Air Force Base and current Ardmore Municipal Airport (KADM), which includes several businesses.
